Storytelling led by Richard Spaul
A workshop on storytelling technique.
An exploration of storytelling has been a major part of in situ:s
work including the remarkable site-specific productions of Boccaccio’s
Decameron ( 2000), Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (2005/6) and Ovid's
Metamorphoses (2007).
This class focuses on storytelling in performance.
What makes a good storyteller? How can an audience be gripped,
moved and excited by a story?
During the weekend, participants will experience a multitude of
games, tricks and exercises designed to improve their storytelling
capabilities, including vocal range and strength, powers of characterisation
and transformation, how to create rhythm and tension within a story, and
how to create a rapport with your audience.
Participants will be expected to come armed with a story to tell.

Acting Shakespeare led by Richard Spaul
From Othello in 1982 to The Macbeth Project in 2001, Richard Spaul
has, first as Artistic Director of Cambridge Experimental Theatre
and more recently as a director of in situ:, wrestled with Shakespeare's
greatest texts, making them yield new and surprising meanings. An
energetic opponent of restrictive and authoritarian approaches to
Shakespeare's work, Richard will be offering a range of imaginative
ways into Shakespeare that are funny, subversive and liberating.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the use of games to shake
up a text or a scene, plus detailed work on Voice, Space and Status.
Participants will be expected to learn a short solo piece of their
own choosing, plus a dialogue which will be supplied.

Explore Your Voice And Sing
led by Margaret Pikes
Margaret Pikes is a singer and teacher. She is one of the founder
members of the influential Roy Hart Theatre, the radical performance
group of the 1970s that created the concept of the extended voice
and has had a powerful influence on Voice in the Theatre ever since.

After the sell-out successes of Margaret's previous workshops we're
delighted to have her back for another session.
This is what she says about her work:
"In my work we explore the dynamic sources of the voice
through individual and group improvisations, aimed at increasing
vocal range and expression. The classes include breathing and movement
exercises and we will also learn some simple polyphonic songs."
Margaret is an inspirational teacher - you will emerge from this
workshop brimful of energy and new ideas.

The Whole Voice led by Noah
Pikes
"Sounding your depths and scaling your heights - the way
to your authentic voice"
Noah Pikes is a founder member of The Roy Hart Theatre, the influential
Voice-Theatre group of the 1970s. He is an internationally-regarded
voice teacher, creator of The Whole Voice and author of Dark Voices:The
Genesis of the Roy Hart Theatre. This is what he says about his
work:
The Whole Voice reaches beyond conventional singing or speech training
to enable reconnections with the roots of vocal expression. Like
a tree with many branches grows a voice full of strength, suppleness
and life. Through playful sounding, in improvisations and in focused
exercises and researches, the trust in ones vocal capabilities is
re-awoken and unimagined possibilities of range, colour, texture,
power, dynamic and shape emerge. The sources of human identity and
creativity are tapped into; the magic of speaking, singing and sounding
are re-found.
Noah is a teacher of great power and vision, with a marvellous
ear for the possibilities of the individual voice. You will emerge
from this workshop refreshed, invigorated and full of new insights.
