Learn to act with in situ:

Learn to Act is a weekend workshop, introducing people to a broad range of acting techniques.

A group of actors working together

All of in situ:'s performers start by doing Learn to Act, either at Beginners or Advanced levels. Many performers who turn up (slightly apprehensively!) to Learn to Act I become extremely accomplished performers and work with in situ: on many projects over many years.

For some it remains an enjoyable hobby. For others, it becomes the most important thing that they do. A few become professional performers.

About Learn to Act

Learn to Act reflects in situ:'s deeply-held belief that with time, effort, encouragement and good teaching, everybody is capable of becoming an effective performer, regardless of age, background or previous experience. This has been proved again and again over the many years that Learn to Act has been running. All we need is your time and enthusiasm.

Duration

Beginners: 1 weekend
Advanced: 1 weekend
Performance: 1 evening per week and some days at weekends

Learn to Act I (The Beginners Class)

This is where most people start. It takes the form of an introductory weekend and is specially geared to those with little or no acting experience.

The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, the mood is lighthearted, and great emphasis is placed on developing the confidence and abilities of people who may initially be a little apprehensive!

By the end of the weekend, participants will be confident in a range of acting skills, including improvisation, using the breath and the voice, creating an effective stage picture and building a character. At the end of the weekend, many students want to take things further...

Learn to Act II (The Advanced Class)

...allows them to do exactly that. Also a weekend course, Learn to Act II explores more challenging areas of acting, such as text, movement, vocal skills and staging dialogue. It is attended by many people who complete Learn to Act I and want to go further, but it is also open to people who already have performing experience and are in search of something more demanding. It is entirely up to you which one you want to do.

One of the main themes of Learn to Act II is The Voice, and you will encounter many games, exercises and techniques designed to widen the range, power and flexibility of the voice, that most versatile of all instruments, which so many people are reluctant or unable to use to its full potential either in performance or in other areas of their lives. This theme is closely related to the exploration and interpretation of Text.

All participants will be asked to choose and learn a text, which they will have a chance to perform in all sorts of contrasting ways as the course progresses, with a view to discovering how the written word can be made to come alive in performance. We will also work on a text by a major playwright, such as Chekhov or Ibsen.

At the end of the course, participants will be in a position to perform for an audience and will be invited to take part in:

Learn to Act III (The Performance)

If you feel ready, you can take the plunge and go on stage, whether in a small-scale platform performance or in one of in situ:'s full-length, large-scale performances that have given the group its excellent reputation for ambitious and exciting new work. This course takes the form of 10 evening classes, plus a weekend to consolidate the performance. It is usually only open to people who have completed Learn to Act II and is not advertised more widely.
